Justice SV Gangapurwala appointed Chief Justice of Madras High Court, notification issued by Central Government

The Central Government on Friday approved the appointment of Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Justice SV Gangapurwala as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

According to the notification issued by the Union Law Ministry “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. His appointment will be effective from the date of assumption of charge.

The Supreme Court collegium comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice KM Joseph had recommended the appointment of Justice SV Bhatti as the Chief Justice on April 19, 2023.

On 13 March 2010, Justice SV Gangapurwala was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court. From 11 December 2022, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
