Caste-based Census: No Relief to Bihar Government from Supreme Court, Ban on Caste Census Continues

The Supreme Court has refused to lift the ban imposed by the Patna High Court on the caste-based census by the Bihar government.

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Justice Rajesh Bindal was hearing a petition filed by the Bihar government in the matter.

The bench refused to grant relief to the Bihar government in this matter. The Court says that the impugned order of the Patna High Court is an interim order and the matter is listed for July 3 in the Patna High Court.

However, the court has agreed to list the matter on July 14 if the matter is not taken up for hearing on July 3 in the Patna High Court.

It may be noted that the Patna High Court has put an interim stay on the caste-based survey being conducted by the Bihar government in the state and has listed the matter for next hearing on July 3. But the state government challenged the order of the Patna High Court by filing a petition in the Supreme Court.
