On Tuesday, Britain said that it would implement a new rule to limit the ability of large internet firms like Google, Facebook and Amazon to restrict competition in digital markets.
The administration said that the legislation will improve consumer protection by making it simpler to cancel internet subscriptions and to deal with bogus reviews.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Britain’s antitrust body, established dedicated Digital Markets Unit two years ago, having the expertise to regulate new markets including social media.
The Bill once streamed by the Parliament will sort out that by giving the DMU new powers over tech companies that have a global turnover of more 25 billion pounds ($31.2 billion) or a British turnover above 1 billion pounds.
It should be noted that European Union (EU) last year brought in its own legislation to tackle big tech’s hegemony.
CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said, “This bill is a legal framework fit for the digital age.”
