Best Bakery case: Two accused acquitted In 2002 Burning of 14 People Alive
A mob burned down The Best Bakery at Hanuman Tekri in Vadodara, Gujarat. The arson claimed the lives of 14, including the Sheikh family who managed the bakery. Before setting the bakery on fire, the mob also plundered it.
On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court issued a significant ruling. Two defendants in the Gujarat’s Best Bakery case were exonerated by the court on Tuesday. Harshad Raoji Bhai Solanki and Mafat Manilal Gohil were found not guilty in the case, which dates back 21 years.
As per information, the Best Bakery case occurred in March 2002. The mob set fire to The Best Bakery, which was situated in Hanuman Tekri in Vadodara, Gujarat. The arson claimed the lives of 14, including the Sheikh family who managed the bakery. Before setting the bakery on fire, the mob also plundered it. The Gujarati police took this seriously and filed a complaint against 21 persons. However, a Vadodara court freed him in 2003 as a result of evidence.
The case was sent back to the Maharashtra court in 2004 by the Supreme Court for review. In February 2006, a court in Maharashtra condemned nine of the defendants to life in prison. The court cleared eight of the charges. Four suspects were detained in 2013, even though they had fled. The party who was wronged, dissatisfied with the court’s ruling a second time as well, has now re-filed a petition with the Bombay High Court.
Five of the nine lifers were discharged by the High Court following a hearing in 2012. Of the four apprehended suspects, two passed away. The other two suspects, Harshad Raoji Bhai Solanki and Mafat Manilal Gohil, were thereafter imprisoned. On Tuesday, the judge also allowed them to leave.
