2019 Delhi Riots Case: Delhi HC issues notice to Delhi Police on Sharjeel Imam’s plea against sedition charge
The Delhi High Court on Friday issued a notice to the Delhi Police while hearing the plea of Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the case related to the 2019 Jamia violence.
Student leader Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the case, has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking quashing of a supplementary charge sheet adding charges of sedition and hate speech against him.
Justice Rajneesh Bhatnagar’s bench, while hearing Imam’s petition, issued a notice to the Delhi Police asking it to clarify its stand.
The court has also directed the Delhi Police to file a status report in this matter.
The petition challenges the inclusion of charges of sedition and hate speech against Imam.
In this case, the Delhi Police had filed a supplementary charge sheet on 16 December 2020, in which the charges of sedition and hate speech were included against Sharjeel Imam.
The petitioner argues that a separate FIR has already been registered against two other speeches, including the objectionable speech allegedly given during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The petitioner has sought a direction from the court to proceed with the hearing of the cases going on in the lower court.
It is worth mentioning that Imam has been accused of allegedly giving objectionable speech at Jamia University during the demonstrations in Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019.
