AI is replete with possibilities: CJI DY Chandrachud

Addressing the National Conference on Digitization at Odisha Judicial Academy CJI DY Chandrachud highlighted the gloomy side of live streaming of court’s proceedings.

Justice Chandrachud said that, “We have been using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for transcription of the proceedings of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. The transcript is provided to lawyers to clean up any errors.” He added that “AI is replete with possibilities. How do you expect a judge to digest the evidence in a statutory appeal in a record involving 15,000 pages? AI can prepare entire record for you.”

However, he remained cautious about actual procedural use of AI while delivering the sentences after conviction.

He further said that livestreaming of court’s proceedings, some of which are viral on social media channels including YouTube, may have flip side as well, and need to be controlled.

He made strong case for digitization of court’s proceedings, saying, “…the digital infrastructure we intend to create is firstly paperless courts.”
